Hewn from the Rock

The Mirror

Isn't it remarkable how children often mirror their parents? A son might resemble his father, and a father may desire his son to think and act like him. Similarly, a mother often hopes her daughter will follow in her footsteps. When you observe them together, their similarities are striking.

In Genesis 1:26, God declares, "Let Us make man in Our image and likeness." This declaration implies that God intended for humanity to reflect His nature, to behave like Him, to think like Him, and to rule like Him.

The divine declaration, "I Am that I Am," is followed by the creative act of making man in His likeness. This suggests that God desires humans to embody His very essence.

Dug out

In Isaiah 51:1, Abba says, "Hearken to me, ye that follow after righteousness, ye that seek the LORD: look unto the rock whence ye are hewn, and to the hole of the pit whence ye are digged."

The wordplay in this verse is profound. Let's dig deeper and break down the Hebrew words to gain better understanding:

The word for rock is צוּר (tsûr): This word paints a picture of catching, hooking, or latching onto the security of the Highest. The Rock from which we are hewn is the Rock of Ages, the True Secure Foundation, the Chief Cornerstone, Jesus!

God's original intention for humanity was to be exactly like Him! Jesus is not merely an example for us but an example of us!

Consider the following words that follow:

  • The hole: The Hebrew word maqqebeth comes from the root word נָקַב (nâqab), which means life, continuation, mindful, back of the head, or thinking. This imagery represents fleshly desire and self-focused works.

  • Dug: The Hebrew word נָקַר (nâqar), similar to the word for "hole," means life, continuation, mindful, back of the head, or person. This signifies a shift in focus from self to God.

When the Spirit of the living God indwells the house instead of the law that kills (Romans 8:2), the focus shifts to Jesus!

We are a chip off the Block, designed for great and wondrous things!

Isaiah 51:2-9 further elaborates on this prophecy that was fulfilled in Yah’shua, Jesus.

Salvation is the word

Note the word used for "salvation" in verse 8:

  • ישׁוּעָה (yahshû‛âh): These Hebrew letters spell out "Jesus"!

The words in this prophetic scripture point directly to Jesus: righteousness, salvation, strength, the arm of YHVH, trust, joy, gladness, comfort, rest, light, and the ROCK!

Therefore, it is natural for Peter to declare in 1 Peter 2:1-9:

Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings,

As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:

If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.

To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious,

Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.

Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.

Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,

And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.

"Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded."

"Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,"

"And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed."

"But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light."

“But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light”

We are who we are because of I AM.
