The Word is Life, Medicine unto all flesh

What is life?

Is this a philosophical question?

Actually, it is very simple, straight-forward question with a very simple straight-forward Answer. And we find it (...Him) spread out through all scripture.

Turning to Solomon for some perspective

The wise Solomon provides us with some perspective in Proverbs 4:20-27.

My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings.

Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart.

For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh.

Followed by some free advice

Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life

Put away from thee a froward mouth, and perverse lips put far from thee.

Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee.

Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established.

Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil.

Let's dive into some original Hebrew

Life is the Hebrew word chay or חַי which means alive or a life, wild, running, to be filled, to spring forth. The ancient Hebrew word-picture shows the revealed (or secured) hand (the Arm or Hand of God - Jesus).

The Hebrew word for word is dâbâr or דָּבָר which means the matter, the cause, the affair, the business, the case, the message, the reason, the tidings, the sign, the explanation. Can you see how the Word is Jesus?

The word-picture for dâbâr or דָּבָר depicts the door to the house is the highest person (that is Jesus!).

Please also check out previous posts on dâbâr here and here and here.

Health to all flesh ...

Well, didn't King David see this coming? He sent his word [dâbâr - Jesus], and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions. Psa 107:20

We find Life in the New Testament

The disciple who calls himself the one that Jesus loved, John (Yôchânân - YHVH gives Grace) provides a beautiful exposition in John 1:1-5, certainly one of my favourite scriptures of all time.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

Wow! Breath in again ...

The same was in the beginning with God.

All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. Joh 1:1-5

In the darkness there came someting that provided light - the Word Who is Life Himself, the Word Who said let there be light ... let there be life ...

... pure Logic (see here for better understanding of the Greek word Logos).

And it is all about Him as Life

So, Life Himself said it perfectly.

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself Joh 5:24 & 26.

John says he even touched the Word of Life

That which was from the beginning,
which we have heard,
which we have seen with our eyes,
which we have looked upon,
and our hands have handled,
of the Word of life 1 Jn 1:1

With practical application to those who seek

When God said onto the Israelite people I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live (Deu 30:19), He meant it. He was talking about His Son!

And so now that you have been justified by the Life-Giver, Jesus, we can read the words of Solomon in perfect perspective when it says the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day. Pro 4:18

The day has come.

The perfect work of the cross.

The Word that spoke Life ...

It is Finished!
