Logic is all we need

The Word Made Flesh: Experiencing Logos as Grace in Our Lives

In the IT world we define “logic” as a system of reasoning used to design, develop, understand and maintain a system of intelligence and operations. It's the foundation for processing information and making decisions based on underlying principles.

I asked AI for some English language expressions where the word "logic" is used to get some sort of understanding of how we humans see "logic". Here is the result:

A sound mind in a sound body.

Logic is the gatekeeper of reason.

Logic is the foundation of truth.

Logic is the bridge between the known and the unknown.

Logic is the tool that allows us to understand the world around us.

Logic is the key to solving problems and making sound decisions.

Logic is the antidote to irrationality and prejudice.

Logic is the light that guides us through the darkness of uncertainty.

Logic is the compass that points us in the right direction.

Logic is the foundation of all human progression.

… and it struck me that logic is basis for soundness, truth, knowledge, understanding, survival, certainty, and even life. There is a distinct correlation between our understanding of “logic” and Logic Himself!

Where it all begins

The Gospel of John opens with a profound declaration: "In the beginning was the Word (logos or logic), and the Word (logos) was with God, and the Word (logos) was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made" (John 1:1-3).

This "Word," Logos in Greek, is not merely a concept but the very essence of God - Jesus, the creative and founding principle behind any and all existence.

Logos: More Than Just Words

In Greek philosophy, Logos encompasses reason, logic, and order. It represents the underlying principle that governs the universe, the divine reason that brings coherence to chaos. John reveals and attributes Logos to a divine person in the Trinity, who existed eternally with God the Father, Jesus.

This concept of Logos has profound implications for our own reasoning, our logic and understanding of God. There can be no understanding of who God is without the Spirit of Logos (Jesus). It shapes and nurtures our relationship with Him. It reveals that God is not an impersonal force but a communicative and relational being. Rather, He is a loving Father who desires to be known, to share Himself with His creation, and to establish a deep and meaningful relationship with humanity, the very object of His affection.

The Word Incarnate: Grace in Human Form

The most astonishing aspect of Logos is its incarnation in Jesus Christ. "And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth" (John 1:14). The eternal Logic of God, the source of all creation, took on human form, becoming one of us. This act of self-emptying, of God becoming human, is the ultimate expression of God's grace. It flies in the face of human logic, but it is the logical, perfect wisdom to an All-Affectionate-God.

Grace, in its essence, is unmerited favor. It is the undeserved love and kindness of God bestowed upon undeserving humanity. It is the selfless act of an almighty God Who would stoop to any level to embrace the object of His affection.

The Heart of Grace,

not virtue's prize, nor merit's claim,

moreover love's embrace, a burning flame.

from a heart forlorn and object sought,

in human flesh born for grace restored.

The incarnation of Logos demonstrates the overwhelming grace of God. God, in His infinite love, chose to enter our world, to experience and take upon Himself our limitations, to share in our humanity and stand in our stead.

Jesus as the Logic of God: A Deeper Dive

While the concept of Jesus as the "Logos" emphasizes His role as the divine communicator and source of all creation, we can further explore His embodiment of God's logic.

1. Jesus is the Incarnation of Divine Reason:

Order and Coherence: As the Logos, Jesus represents the underlying order and coherence of the universe. He is the embodiment of divine reason, the principle that governs all creation.

Truth and Consistency: Jesus' teachings and life consistently demonstrate a profound understanding of human nature and its complexities. His parables, while often simple, convey the deep truths about the human condition and God's character.

Logical Arguments: Jesus frequently employed logical arguments in His teachings, healings, devinations and debates. He challenged the religious leaders of His day with insightful questions and irrefutable logic, exposing their hypocrisy and flawed reasoning. At the same time, He did not tolerate the wiles of the enemy such as deceptions, sickness and even death.

2. Jesus as the Fulfillment of God's Plan:

Logical Consistency: The life, death, and resurrection of Jesus fulfill the prophecies and promises made throughout the Old Testament. This demonstrates a consistent and logical unfolding of God's plan for salvation.

Moral Consistency: Jesus is the example of a consistent and coherent moral framework, with love for the Father, every man, woman and child, forgiveness, and justice, offering a clear and logical path to a meaningful and fulfillment of His life … giving it all to us.

3. Jesus as the Way, the Truth, and the Life:

The Path to Truth: Jesus claimed to be "the way, the truth, and the life" (John 14:6). That is the only logic that shall ever exist. He presents Himself as the only path to true knowledge of God and eternal life. This statement, while seemingly exclusive, is rooted in the logical understanding that there can only be one true God and one true path to Him leading to the only life - Life Himself.

The Truth Incarnate: Jesus embodies the ultimate truth. His words and actions reveal the true nature of God, the reality of human existence, and the path to salvation.

4. Jesus as the Source of Wisdom:

Divine Wisdom: As the Logic of God, Jesus is the source of all wisdom. He imparts wisdom to those who choose and receive Him, enabling them to navigate the complexities of life and to make wise decisions.

Experiencing Logos as Grace in Our Daily Lives

How does this understanding of Logos as grace impact our lives today?

  • Communication and Relationship: As the Word, Jesus is the perfect communicator. Life and death is in the power of the tongue. Jesus is Life. He bridges the gap between God and humanity, revealing the heart and mind of the Father. He brings us over from death to Life.  Through Jesus, we can know God intimately, experience His love, and enter into a deep and abiding relationship with Him, forever.

  • Transformation: Just as the Logos brought order and coherence to the cosmos, it can bring order and transformation to our lives. By abiding in Christ, and knowing that God’s logic abides in us, we allow the Logos to work within us and through us, renewing our minds and transforming us into the image of God, passing from death to life.

  • Mission and Ministry: As bearers of the Logos, we are called to share the good news of God's love with the world. We are to be channels of the Word, Grace, reflecting the love and compassion of Christ to those around us.

  • Finding Meaning and Purpose: In a world often characterized by chaos and uncertainty, the Logos provides a framework for meaning and purpose. By aligning our lives with the divine Word, we discover a deeper sense of meaning and purpose in our existence.

Jesus' teachings provide practical wisdom and action for daily living, addressing issues such as relationships, forgiveness, sickness, adversity, set-back and attacks from the enemy.

The Power of the Word:

The Bible repeatedly emphasizes the power of the Word of God. "For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and spirit, of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart" (Hebrews 4:12).

The Word of God, spoken and written, has the power to transform lives, to heal the broken-hearted, and to set the captives free, because the Word is Jesus. God’s logic is Jesus!. It is through the Word that we encounter the living Christ, experience His grace, and are empowered to live a life of purpose, power and significance.

Conclusion

The concept of Logos in the Gospel of John provides a profound understanding of God's nature and His relationship with humanity. As the Word made flesh, God’s Logic became known. Jesus Christ embodies the grace and love of God. By embracing the Logos in our lives, we experience the transformative power of God's Word and live a life of purpose and significance.

"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly" (Colossians 3:16), allowing the Logos to shape our thoughts, guide our actions, and transform us into the image of Christ.
