Well, it is the fear-provoking-teaching with the aim to get you to attain something you already have, but by your own works. It lays down the , rules for a deadly, yet unnecessary game by perverting the Gospel of Grace.
It gives opportunity for self condemnation and condemnation of others. People say "well, just look at the fruit!"
Taken out of context
Preaching like this is usually taken from what Paul wrote to the Galatians (Gal 5:20-23) saying the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. Or where he says to the Ephesians (Eph 5:9) the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth.
The law-preacher will twist the whole message. He will make you believe that you are the one who has to bear fruit and that you need to tray harder and harder.
Instead, it is not by your own strength and ability that you bear fruit or a certain kind of fruit. It is Who you behold (remember this post).
But in Context
Look within context and you find the untwisted message.
Paul says it plainly in each case.
Eph 5:8 - For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light
You are now righteous, clothed with a cloak of Righteousness - the enabling factor for you to bear fruit.
Gal 5:18 - But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.
Allow the Spirit to lead you. Not a set of rules and laws on behavior- modification that determine how and what fruit you must bear.
But, there's the law
So, what is or was the purpose of the law or a law then?
He explains it to Titus knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers. 1Ti 1:9

Are you righteous?
Then allow the abiding Spirit of Christ to bear fruit in and through you!
Be led by a Person ... not a set of rules!
